MAINTAINING MOMENTUM IN A LEADERSHIP TEAM
-by Dr. John Tetsola

The strength of true leadership is found in the strength of his team or those around him. Teams don’t win and morale is never high without the instilling of momentum. Momentum is key in creating both a winning and a moving team. To help a team maintain a high morale and momentum, there are four things to consider. .

  • First, learn to keep the team focused and on course. Focus is everything. Focus is connected to every aspect of our lives. When focus is broken, momentum is also broken. A team that maintains its focus is a team that is bound to win, in spite of how long winning takes. If team members lose their focus or get off course, then they will stop winning.

  • Second, learn to communicate successes. You are the greatest prophet of your destiny. Let the communication of your mouth be communication of success in spite of the obstacles of pursuit. Nothing boosts morale like winning and then celebrating it.

  • Third, learn to remove morale busters. Learn to protect the morale and the momentum of a team from being stolen. Morale and momentum must be protected. The enemy looks for opportunity to burst our morale and deflate the momentum of our pursuit. A leader must be able to discern the morale busters of his team in order to keep the momentum of a team intact. Once a team is rolling in the right direction, the leader of the team must keep it rolling. Leaders see before others do, so they need to protect the team from the things that will hurt the team.

  • Finally, learn to allow other leaders to lead. When a leader prepares other team members to lead and then turns them loose to do it, two things happen. First, the existing momentum is used to create new leaders for the team. It is easier to make new leaders successful if they are part of a successful team. Second, it increases the leadership of the team, and that makes the team even more successful.
